'...milongas, tangos and chacareras, each one tumbling after the other with a mix of wry nonchalance and highly disciplined precision...' irish times
lunfardia is an eclectic quintet performing the music of south america with influences drawn from jazz and the occasional touch of eastern europe.
featuring ioana on violin, ariel hernandez on vocals and guitar, frank vidal on percussion, dermot dunne on accordion and malachy robinson on double bass, the quintet's fresh approach and dynamic performing style has earned them a loyal fanbase at home and abroad. have a look at the website by clicking here where you can also buy the debut cd picada pa'cinco and find information on the accompanying national tour happening in march 2008.
as former leader and founder member of the callino quartet, ioana enjoyed seven years of intensive quartet life including concerts, touring, recording and education workshops. a hugely versatile ensemble, the quartet won an international prize for their interpretation of haydn at the paolo borciani string quartet competition in 2003 and they were equally committed to all kinds of music, working closely with composers such as peteris vasks and franghiz ali-zadeh on interpreting their own works and collaborating with a wide range of artists such as john abercrombie (jazz guitar), julius drake (piano), canadian rock band arcade fire, edgar meyer (double bass) and the belcea quartet to name but a few.
the callino quartet's recording of ian wilson's string quartets is available on the riverrun label (visit the recordings page for more information) and their annual festival 'callino and friends' still takes place every year over easter weekend in ireland - see the callinos' website for more details by clicking here.
