H / N

previously-played violin strings, sterling silverpoint and 22ct goldpoint on prepared 12’ x 12’ wood panels

January 2024

In November 2023, I spent time in the studio with Musici Ireland recording our debut cd, Earthrise, and was bowled over when Artistic Director and close friend Beth suggested that I also create the artwork for the album. As a long-standing member of the ensemble, it was important to me that I capture the nuances and dynamics of the group of musicians, the music we recorded, and the interplay between old and new that this album explores. It was a fresh challenge for me to have to consider practicalities, and it went through several variations before finally settling into its rightful place. Among the violin strings weaving through and linking the four panels are the very set I played on throughout the recording sessions.

H / N intertwines past and present, mirroring the very ethos of the Earthrise album. Sterling silverpoint and 22-carat goldpoint delicately trace the shadow paths of a violin string as it unwinds across changing landscapes, the colours shifting by semi-tones, while subtle changes in light and perspective create elusive inversions…shadows gleam and shine casts darkness.

H / N is currently in residence at the Contemporary Music Centre in Dublin, following Musici Ireland’s launch of the Earthrise album in late February 2025. Lovely to see it on the wall, lit up and in company!

With the fabulous Musici Ireland crew and composer Linda Buckley…and chatting with CMC’s Jonathan Grimes for their amplify podcast, as he led Beth and I through some of the background, inspirations and processes behind the album and the artwork.
